The Whyld Girls program inspires and enables girls to think and speak for themselves. The girls play an active role in leadership and in planning events and projects. They learn to practice and connect their gifts to the possibilities of their future as well as their future role in their community and world.
Success in the Whyld is not framed by "perfection" but by the determination to "not give up."
The Whyld Girls is a gender specific Program of Children and Family Urban Ministries. The program focuses its energy on the potential and leadership that adolescent girls offer our community and world. Each year the girls participate in a major group project. The project provides opportunities to apply the writing and reading skills they learn in school with experiences in the community. Integrating education with their realities empowers the girls to find and strengthen their voices. A repeated phrase the girls learn and use to encourage one another in the midst of their work is, "Yes, thinking is hard work, but if you don't do your own thinking, someone else will do your thinking for you!"
Fostering healthy relationships with their peers and with adult mentors creates a space where girls feel safe and can relax. The program offers girls the respect they deserve for their hard work as well as encouragement in their struggles.
